If you are looking to buy a home and also are an animal lover like me, here are some tips you really need to consider…
I am not just paying homage to one of my feline masters today. Pet owners know that our 4 legged family members mean so much to us. So if you are buying a new home, it is important to consider what is best for your pets.
Let’s look at some things pet owners should think about when house hunting:
The Floor Plan
I the floor plan is one thing that some pet owners don’t consider. If you have an older pet that can’t get up and down the stairs, then you need to look for a single story home.
Something else to consider is how cats love to hide. If they have a place to go take their naps and chill out every day, it is very likely they will be happier. And if the cat isn’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!
My cats can be messy when eating. I really do not understand why the older one (picture above) likes to take food out of the bowl and drop it onto the floor right beside her bowl. But cat food on the floor is not something we want our guests to see. Or step in/on. So we choose a place to locate the food/water bowls that is convenient for the cats while not in the main part of the house.
You also have to think about a good place to locate their litter box. I suggest finding somewhere both practical and with some privacy. Plus you need to consider the smell factor of a litter box.
A great selling point for a home is a fenced yard. It isn’t just parents that like the security of a fenced yard. Pet owners should also consider the advantages of a fenced yard. If it is, then you can let your dog outside to run around. You may want to avoid homes on busy roads in case your pet escapes.
And if you do let your dog hang in the back yard, then you must make sure there is room for a a dog house. Plus if there are shade trees, then the dog can just chill out and escape the hot summer sun or drizzle on a rainy day.
Obviously you are going to want to live in a pet friendly neighborhood. Such a simple suggestion but sadly it is often over looked. So take some time to look at the neighborhood. Do the neighbors have dogs and cats? See anyone walking their dogs?
How far is it to the vet? Is there a dog park nearby?
Finding a pet friendly neighborhood is important since it means your pet will have an easier time adjusting to their new home! Plus you will be happier in your new home!
You need to check out the laws regarding pets BEFORE buying a home. Some areas have leash laws that you must obey. Or there may be laws about cleaning up after your pet. I know YOU always clean up after your dog but if you don’t, it could lead to a very expensive fine!
Or maybe the neighborhood/community has restrictions against certain types of pets. I am not saying this is right but this is something you need to consider!
The Unusual Pets
I am sure the people with unusual pets are thinking “What about me?”
Hey most people have dogs and cats, but if you have pets that are unusual, you MUST check the rules/laws before buying. There are some areas that are fine with you owning a goat, chicken, donkey, sheep, etc as a pet. But you better check the zoning regulations/ordinances BEFORE you buy a house.
These are just a few things to consider on behalf of your pet when you are buying a home. Like my profile says, I love animals. So I understand how important it is to have a home that is right for you AND your pets!
I suggest you think about these important things when buying a pet friendly home!
