If you are searching for your dream home, finding the right location might seem like looking for buried treasure without a map. But here are a some clues to help…
When you are searching for your dream home, finding the right location might seem like looking for buried treasure without a map. The value of of real estate has so much to do with it’s location, so where you decide to buy is very important. But what stuff should you consider when you are choosing where to buy a home?
Every Day Ending in a Y
If you work in town, living out in the country means that you will have to add up all the extra time and gas it is going to take just to get to work every day. Homes that are just a little bit out of town might seem cheaper, but when you add up the extra cost for gas and your time, it might be cheaper to look at homes closer to town.
Plus, you will want to think about how far you have to drive to go shopping. Don’t get me wrong though. I totally understand the value of living off the beaten path.
Think About the Future
If I could predict the future, I would be sitting on a beach with my wife doing an imitation of a Corona commercial. But since nobody knows exactly what the future holds, the best you can do is research and think long and hard about the “what if’s”.
So when you are selecting the location for your house, you need to do some research about any future developments in that area. Something might happen in the future that could help the property’s value. Or hurt it. Also the home you love might turn into the home you want to sell because of these changes whether they are good or bad. Something to consider.
Be Just a Little Nosy
I am sure that you are going to check out every home from top to bottom with a fine tooth comb. However, you also need to cruise around the neighborhood and check out the other homes. Are the other homes well maintained? Are there any potential problems nearby that will hurt you if or when you decide to sell?
If you buy a home and then find out later that you are downwind of a chicken farm, then how are you going to feel?
$10 Cheeseburger Or $5 Cheeseburger
Have you ever ate at a restaurant and when the meal was over, you felt like you should have gone somewhere cheaper? Did you think that you could have paid less and had just as good a meal?
Well that can be true about the location for your home also.
You can pay more but will it be as satisfying to you? I suggest looking for somewhere that has the right balance of value to price. Just remember that you get what you pay for in real estate!
Some areas cost more but there are good reasons why. Other areas might be cheaper but might not have as much going for them. Considering how much you are going to spend, don’t you want to find the perfect location?
The Take Away
I just touched on a few things to consider. There is much more you MUST consider.
Such as the school district.
Is there cable and high speed internet available?
Does the neighborhood have an HOA? If it does, how much is it and what do you get for the money you are paying?
I could go on and on. But when you are buying a home, it isn’t just the home you have to consider.
Remember the location is just as important!
