Taking care of your home’s gutters is really important and super simple. Here are a few tips for gutter maintenance!
If you are looking at houses for sale, you should always check out the gutters. Or notice if a home does NOT have gutters. Installing gutters can be expensive but it is a very important home improvement.
If a home doesn’t have gutters it could mean lead to thousands of dollars in damage to your foundation. And that is going to be even more expensive than having gutters installed.
This is why it’s a good idea to install gutters. Or if your home already has gutters, you really need to take care of them. Here are some tips for gutter maintenance:
Unclog The Gutters
I would suggest that you perform some basic gutter maintenance every year. This includes cleaning all the leaves, sticks or animal nests out of your gutters. You also nee to remove downspout cages and clean them.
This is a perfect time to decide if the gutters need to be replaced or any repairs.
If a downspout is clogged, you can try using a plumbing snake. Then use a hose to force water down the spout and hopefully remove the rest of the clog.
Check The Pitch
The pitch of your gutters refers to the angle that the gutters slope downwards. Gutters should be set on an incline of 1/4 inch for every 10 feet. For example, if your gutter is 20 feet long, then it should have a drop of 1/2 inch. If there isn’t enough pitch, then water can overflow because it can’t drain quick enough.
Most gutters also have a high point in the middle so the water runs both ways to downspouts on each end.
Seal Leaky Gutters
The next time it rains will give a great opportunity to check your gutters for leaks. After the rains stops, take a walk around your home and look for any leaks. Be sure to look for any puddles underneath the gutter that are the result of puddles.
If your gutters are leaking it can can cause water damage to vinyl, brick or stone siding. If you do have leaks it is not the end of the world and they can be easily fixed. Head down to the hardware store and pick up some sealant for the small leaks. If there are bigger leaks, you will need to buy a gutter maintenance patch kit.
The small cost of keeping your gutters in good shape is very cheap compared to what can happen if you do NOT maintain them!
Replace Damaged or Missing Gutters
If any part of your gutter falls off or is damaged beyond repair, then you MUST replace it. All you will need is 2 ladders, a friend to help, the new piece of gutter, joint connectors and some sealant.
First you remove the old joint connectors, Then clean the area. Put some sealant on the new joint connectors. Finally, you install the new piece of gutter.
If this sounds too hard or you are not found of heights, I suggest calling a professional. It is always better to pay someone that knows what they are doing!
Installing A New Downspout
Installing a new downspout for your gutters is similar to replacing any damaged or missing pieces. You will use most of the same tools. And you will also need downspout sections and some self-tapping screws.
One thing you need to be aware of is the drop outlet at the end of the gutter MUST fit securely into the downspout to prevent leaking.
Then fasten the joint with the self-tapping screws. Add more sections as needed. At the bottom you need to use an angled piece to direct the water into the yard.
The best gutters in the world are useless if the water isn’t moving away from your home. I strongly suggest using down spout extensions. There are many different types but it is important to keep the water away from your homes foundation!
A Final Tip
Climbing on ladders and making repairs can be easy for some people. But for some people, it may be best to hire someone to replace or repairs their gutters. Whether you do it yourself or hire some isn’t important. It is important that you take care of your gutters. Proper gutter maintenance is very important for protecting your home’s value!
So keep your mind out of the gutter and on properly maintaining the gutters on your home!
