One of the biggest complaints I hear about homes for sale is that it needs updating…
It has got to the point that it is almost annoying. Yet we cannot ignore this complaint when getting a home ready for the market. Especially since some buyers are looking for any reason to rule out a home!
On the other hand, maybe you are one of the savvy buyers that is considering the homes that DO need updating. You realize that you can get a better deal and do the updating yourself. You know you will save money AND it will be done to your tastes and more importantly, done right!
That’s right. I said to look up. Because those outdated popcorn ceilings are an opportunity for making a change that will make your house more stylish and enjoyable.
The first thing to remember is that behind that ugly ceiling could be some important stuff. Things like plumbing, wiring, joists and structural beams that can be expensive to screw up. Just put on your thinking caps and plan ahead when updating the ceilings in a house.
I have several tips so you won’t feel like you are traveling back in time every time you look up!
As weird as it sounds, you could use wood paneling to make a dramatic change to your ceilings. While this is NOT a change I would suggest for anyone selling a home, just hear me out. Wood paneling is easy to use and can be pretty cheap. Not that you should go with the cheapest stuff you can find since it will probably wind up looking cheap. Remember to always think about quality when making home improvements.
By using wood paneling, you can create a cozy cabin-like feel which would be great in a man cave. This works anywhere you want to turn into a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
Create An Industrial Vibe
If you are like me, then you love the look of a modern home. I will admit it isn’t for everyone but this can be one of the cheapest solutions. I don’t know about you but I like cheap. If there’s an existing ceiling, remove it. Then buy/borrow/rent a paint sprayer and coat everything except the duct work in one dark color. You have probably seen this look in some of the old textile mills that have been converted to upscale trendy housing in the Southeast.
I am sure just the mention of drop ceiling turns off some people. But you really have to investigate some of the stylish options that are available today. I am NOT talking about your parent’s drop ceilings. Now you can find drop ceilings in pressed metal, compressed wood panels and many other attractive designs. They’re affordable, easy to install and allow quick access to the plumbing and electrical systems.
What About Using Drywall
If you have the skill, drywall is a great choice. Drywall can be cheap and it’s easy to paint once installed. Just do some research to see if this is a project you can handle yourself.
The Take Away:
As you can see, there are plenty of options for updating the ceilings of a home. If you are updating a home to get it ready to sell, I suggest going for something more neutral such as drywall and paint. But if you are updating your home, then why not make your home reflect your sense of style and personality?
So don’t let an ugly ceiling get you down.
