If you have just bought a home and are ready to move in, what are the first few things that you will need to do before moving in?
Congratulations! So you just closed on your new home in Upstate South Carolina. But before you unpack the first box, there are some things I suggest you consider doing first! I know that moving can be very stressful for you so I hope this checklist will help.
Change Your Address
This is probably one of the most important tasks to take care of. You must change your address so you won’t miss a single issue of your favorite magazine. Not to mention the bills must arrive on time if you are going to make the payments on time! It is super easy to change address online or you can go the old school route and do it in person at the post office. Either way, when you are moving you must remember to change your address.
Feeling Turned On?
It is a pain to start unloading boxes into a house that has no power. Not to mention you are going to need to take a bathroom break so you need the water on also. So make sure you change the utilities into your name before you move in. I suggest calling at least a week in advance because it takes a few days for the utility companies to make the changes.
Change The Locks
This is in my opinion one the most important things you need to do. When a home is for sell, especially if it is a foreclosure, you don’t know who has a copy of the keys. Changing the locks is something that you need to do before you move into your new house.
Clean The Carpets
Just like you don’t know about the keys to your new home, you don’t know about the carpet. It is much easier to have the carpets cleaned before you move the furniture in. You could either rent a steam cleaner or pay a carpet cleaning service, but either way this will make the house feel really clean and new.
Label the Breaker Box
A real time saver later down the road is if you figure out which breakers do what. This might prevent you from getting zapped so it is pretty important also. Ask someone to help you by standing in another part of the house and letting you know which lights come on or off when you flick the breakers.
Check the Smoke Alarms
Another super important safety issue to work on before you move in is to make sure the smoke alarms and CO monitors are working correctly. You might need to change the batteries.
These are just a few of the important first steps that you should take when you first move into your brand new home.
