A smell will quickly tell buyers if you have pets. Find out how to remove pet odors to help your home sell…
Selling a Home Means Smelling a Home
The more people I meet, the more I love animals. But one thing I do NOT love about animals is how they can make a home smell.
If you are selling a home, pet odors turn off potential buyers!
It is possible that you don’t realize how your furry friends are making your home smell. When you are selling your property first impressions are very important. If a potential buyer gets hits by pet odors when they walk in the door, your chances of making a sale has been destroyed.
Ask your REALTOR for their honest opinion. You can ask your friends and family but it is very possible they don’t want to hurt your feelings. However, your real estate agent’s job is to be the bearer of both good news and bad. It is possible that your REALTOR will say that you have a pet smell problem.
Here is what you can do about pet smells when selling a home:
- Air out your home
- Open up the windows to let fresh air in and remove the stuffiness
- Wash the floors and the walls with an odor-neutralizing cleaning product
- Washing blankets and bedding in a mix of laundry detergent and a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar can help to remove the smells
- Have your carpets professionally cleaned to remove the dog hair and cat dander
- Keep your pet in one part of the house to help make cleaning easier
- If possible, have your pet stay with a friend when the home is on the market
- Change the filters in the HVAC system
You can purchase or rent an ionizer or ozone machine to help eliminate pet odors. This is not the cheapest method but it can be effective given enough time.
Another tactic is using bags of charcoal. Do NOT buy the charcoal with lighter fluid. Cheaper is better. We used tin pie pans and put then in each room.
Boxes of bakng soda can also be used to reduce pet odors. Baking soda is a natural odor eliminator. You can leave open boxes of baking soda in each room to help reduce pet smells.
You can also sprinkle baking soda on carpet, brush it in and leave it over night to soak up smells. Vacuum it up the next day.
Coffee grounds can be used to eliminate smells. Put some coffee grounds in shallow bowls and place them around your house.
Vinegar can also be used to remove pet smells. You can use bowls of white vinegar as an odor neutralizer. I suggest having your carpets professionally cleaned or renting one of the carpet cleaners. You can use vinegar according to Save Money By Using Vinegar In Rental Carpet Cleaners
The bad news is that getting rid of pet smells in carpet may mean you have to replace to carpet and padding. It is possible the subflooring has also soaked up some of the smell. If the subfloor has been soaked with pet urine, you may need to seal it with an odor blocking primer and paint. I have heard about a product called Sealcoat but I do not know how good it is.
When it comes to selling a home, how the home smells can be a deal killer. I have seen buyers turn around right after entering a home because of pet odors. I hope these tips will help you to reduce or eliminate pet smells in your home.
